I'm doing mine with a technique I utilized when I taught in the Fashion Dept @ OTIS. Students did self-portraits and it was interesting to see how their personality and style came through in their sketch.

Used ai illustrator's brush tool + wacom tablet.

"Incoming" is the theme for ArtHouse's Monthly Sketchbook Project for June. arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookmonthliesjune

It took me a couple of weeks to decide what to do for this book (I like to keep a consistent style to these Monthly sketchbooks).

My concept is this: Day in My Life, items are cropped with only a bit showing on page. Linear ink sketches.

Page 1 is my current favorite mug that I have my wake-up tea (Twinings Earl Gray) in. My "Loretta Lynn's Kitchen" souvenir mug purchased in Hurricane Mills, TN on my Road Trip last October. Sketched a while after 2nd cup finished... I wake up WAY earlier than 8am!

Originally, I was going to close the book with another Barbie shoe sketch (it starts with a Barbie flip flop). I never did find the type I was looking for (the classic Barbie mule).
During the search I came across my Great Aunt Carol's charm bracelet that I inherited. Since there were lots of little things on it, I started examining the charms closely as potential models. I noticed that this heart was actually a locket. I opened it up, and inside is the tiniest photo of Great Uncle Russell. That slayed me. How romantic.
They both passed away in the 90s, but I remember them with great fondness. They were both very important in my artistic development.

My left index finger has gotten swollen and this ring no longer fits. I got it soon after moving to soCal in 82 at The Folk Tree in Pasadena. It's been a lot of places with me.

right now I'm using Illustrator to trace over the photo. It's fun and is getting my hand looser.

mini: pencil

this is one of those absurdly small pencils that came with magazine subscription solicitations. are they still sent? haven't gotten one in years.

mini: scissors

I used to carry these around in a small red chinese pouch. got them in hong kong. I love the elegant shape. my drawing arm still shaky and not so elegant.

this came with one of the two flower arrangements that arrived yesterday. from work. the house is suffused with the glorious scent of stargazer lilies. thankfully, the cats refrained from chewing on them.
vision > brain > hand coordination rather wonky, but doesn't hurt to sketch AT ALL. YAY.

mini: evil eye charm from mercedes

I have sketched this before, with its mates. Since then, I lost the one I wore on the right ear in NYC. (Hoop got caught on my scarf, opened, then charm dropped onto ground I think). Can't find the others -- hoping I took one over to Christine's for the Day of the Dead altar that we made for Mercedes last November.
I've been wearing these since about 2001, when I donned them to ward off evil vibes from W, an OTIS coworker who tried to get me laid off. She failed.

mini: treasure

Lots to tell about this one!

In May 1995, I had a residency at Hambidge Arts Colony in Rabun Gap, GA. The garnets were collected from Betty's Creek, down the road from my cabin. The mica was... in the driveway? (I think).
Afterwards, I drove up to New England, hung out in Providence for a bit, then up to Barneveld, NY for a spell. Then it was back on the road for a very circuitous drive home via I-90 to Seattle. Before heading south, I stopped at Pike's Place fish market for razor clams, oysters + salmon to feast on with Lisa + Tim in Gresham, OR. Tim grilled it all to perfection. The pearl was in my oyster.

The pillbox was an OTIS 87 graduation gift from Sage.

random keys. I have no idea what they unlock.

how did this Monopoly piece end up with my jewelry?

mini: grandfather's cartoon dog

not sure that my sketch really captures this so here's a scan of the same:

my mom's dad was known for his quirky drawings of dogs. this one was drawn on 1/8" painted wood (cut from ?) and has a wooden base saying "Mr Guy 2"

mini: paris

Patucci + Mark brought a bunch of these back from their trip to Paris. Je l'aime!

mini: airplane pin

I got this either at a store on Columbus in NYC or at The Front Porch in Providence. One of the ubiquitous tin pins distributed by Easy Aces and sold for 25¢ at gift shops in the 70/80s.

mini: angel pin

My friends Patucci + Mark sold these in their store "The Front Porch" which was located above Anthony's Drugstore at the corner of Angell + Thayer in Providence RI. Did they find them at Wolfe Myrow, the fantastic costume jewelry jobber on Atwells? Or someplace else?

mini: cheese tray

Another dollhouse item that I turned into a pin by gluing on a pinback. I used to wear this at Christmastime as an ironic gesture. It's too old and faded now and does anyone get cheese trays anymore?

these buttons came from a 70s sweater -- a body-hugging wide rib knit style with lots and lots of mini buttons. only vaguely remember the garment, but I loved (and saved) the buttons.

Above are my current "family" of: 8 x 5" (originally for "Sketchbook 2010" never completed, turned into a mostly private book about health issues), a 5.5 x 3.5" (shoes), and 4 x 2.5" (mini)
