colossal strawberry

it's strawberry jam making time, the berries are in peak form
my Produce Man is obtaining a flat of "jam quality" berries on Friday
so Saturday will be jamming day

and the model above? Delicious.
the scent while I sketched? Heavenly.

organizing

Katherine Kean is writing about organizing and inventorying her artwork and it got me thinking about (and drawing) my half-baked process.
How do I keep track? First, I have various notepads where I document a piece as I finish it:

Then I used to use these index cards:
(Katherine mentions these in her post -- I think they are no longer available. She came up with a new form for herself that is very nifty)

Now I use GYST software:One drawback with this system: data entry. I hit a glitch in a section and that was my excuse to stop altogether. So there sit the cards, in a box, part of the clutter.

another cookie

Cookies are my nemesis. I must eat them. They call out to me in their little cookie voices: "Eat me! Eat me!" Truth be told, almost ANY sweet will do the same. My dear Severo is my cookie enabler. "Look honey, these were on sale at work!" (He works at Bob's, a nice Santa Monica grocery store). This Pepperidge Farm specimen is one of his latest finds.

I had devoured maybe 2 of them, was about to down a 3rd when I thought, if I sketch it, it'll at least slow me down a little.

I felt like I was drawing a treasure map as I first did the outline (the island), drew in the chocolate chunks (booty!), and added the oaty texture (topographical features). I went to a pirate-themed bar last night and this may have influenced my thoughts.

Then I decided to add the nutrition info, thought it'd be a nice graphic touch. By the time I finished that, the other 2 cookies had expanded sufficiently that I had no desire to eat my model. I put it BACK into the package! Yes.

girl scout cookie

I discovered a baggie of lemon cookies that Severo hadn't found...
my intention was to not eat the entire box, but, um, I did

"Lemon Chalet Cremes™: Featuring a design of Our Chalet in Switzerland, a beloved Girl Scout World Center, this sandwich cookie has a touch of cinnamon-ginger spice that evokes the warmth of a fireside chat on a snowy evening. They are made by Little Brownie Bakers." from: www.girlscoutcookies.org/meet_the_cookies.asp

20 colors

I made a list and sampled what I thought were my essential oil colors:
Cadmium Lemon
Cadmium Yellow Pale
Cadmium Yellow Medium
(Cadmium Yellow Deep)
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red Light
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Red Deep
Alizarin Crimson
Lamp Black
Titanium White
Cerulean Blue
Manganese Blue Hue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Prussian Blue
Viridian
Sap Green
Naples Yellow
Yellow Ochre

I made some discoveries:
I didn't have Cadmium Yellow Deep and think maybe I can get along without it
Cadmium Red Med and Deep look the same -- all these years I've bought both! I think of the money I could have saved if I'd done this color array 35 years ago...
(yes, I can't believe I've never done this before - silly me)
So my 20 essential colors are now 18 essential colors.
